Recovery Position
The aim of this training is to provide you with vital knowledge to be able to understanding how to correctly position patients in recovery is vital as it reduces the risk of complications and improves patient outcomes. Carers should therefore have knowledge of emergency procedures, proper techniques for placing individuals in the recovery position, management of airways and breathing in this position, and monitoring vital signs and patient response.
The session aims to ensure that participants are not only knowledgeable about the recovery position but are also able to confidently and safely apply it in real-life situations where it could be life-saving.
The sessions cover
Understanding the Recovery Position: Explanation of what the recovery position is, its importance, and when it should be used.
Assessing the Situation: Training on how to assess an unconscious person to determine if they are breathing and whether the recovery position is appropriate.
Step-by-Step Guidance: Detailed instruction on the steps to safely move an unconscious person into the recovery position. This usually includes:
Hands-On Practice: Participants practice placing a person (or a mannequin) in the recovery position. This practical component is crucial for developing confidence and competence in performing the technique.
Monitoring and Aftercare: Information on how to monitor the person’s breathing and responsiveness while they are in the recovery position, and what to do if their condition changes.
Addressing Common Concerns: Discussion of common concerns or issues that might arise when placing someone in the recovery position, such as dealing with a person who is larger or heavier, or managing a person with suspected spinal injuries.
Legal and Ethical Considerations: Briefing on the legal and ethical aspects of providing first aid, particularly in relation to consent and duty of care.
