Tracheostomy change and management

The aim of this training is to provide you with vital knowledge to be able to provide great care to your tracheostomy patients. Understanding how to care for a tracheostomy tube is vital as it reduces infection and mortality rates.
Carers of tracheostomy individuals should therefore have knowledge of emergency equipment, tracheostomy tube changes, secretion management (this includes suctioning, humidification, tracheostomy occlusion, and others), and stoma care.

• Types of tracheostomies
• Anatomy and physiology
• Indication/requirements for a tracheostomy
• Tracheostomy suction using mannequin.
• Importance of Stoma Care in relation to tracheostomy
• Cleaning of a Stoma and proper way to change the dressing and tracheostomy tie.
• Changing a tracheostomy inner cannula
• Changing tracheostomy tubes in the community.
• Communication and care of a patient with a tracheostomy tube.
• Managing complications for a patient with tracheostomy
• Plugging
• Changing the speaking valve.
• Documentation and consent
• Awareness of privacy and dignity while handling the client.
• Laryngectomy management
