Choking
The aim of this training is to provide you with vital knowledge to be able to understanding how to effectively respond to choking incidents is vital as it reduces the risk of serious injury or fatality. Carers of individuals who are at risk of choking should therefore have knowledge of emergency procedures, effective techniques for responding to choking incidents, management of airways obstruction, and monitoring and support following a choking episode.
The sessions cover
Recognition of Choking: Identifying the signs of choking in adults, children, and infants. This includes understanding the difference between mild and severe choking.
Response Procedures: Teaching how to respond immediately and effectively to a choking incident, including the steps to take if the victim is conscious or unconscious.
Heimlich Maneuver for Adults and Children: Demonstrating and practicing the Heimlich maneuver (abdominal thrusts) on adults and children who are choking.
Back Blows and Chest Thrusts: Instruction on how to perform back blows and chest thrusts, especially for infants, or in situations where the Heimlich maneuver is not appropriate or effective.
Safety Precautions: Understanding how to perform these procedures safely to avoid causing harm to the choking individual.
Calling for Emergency Help: Guidance on when and how to call for emergency medical assistance during a choking episode.
Aftercare: Instructions on post-incident care, including checking for injuries caused by the choking or the response, and monitoring the individual until professional help arrives.
